Neo Apocalypse
23 February 2007

They came, they saw and one team conquered! Yes, the much-awaited event planned, organized and executed wholly by the coordinators of IEEE-VESIT was presented open for the members on 23rd Feb, 2007. Neo-Apocalypse not only tested the knowledge of the members, but also gave them a platform to know their skills in forming plans, strategies and their showing their presence of mind.

In the modern age, battles are no longer fought outside castle gates or in trenches. What matters the most now is how much you know. Guns and tanks don’t win wars anymore. The “World War III” is all about defense plans, offense strategies, secret bases and NOC-lists. These are the very facts the whole event was based on.

The elite, the elusive, the few, the guardians of the key to supremacy are the COVERT-OPERATIVES. As the Counter-Intelligence Team (CIT) of the country assigned to each team, it was their mission to hunt down and capture these covert-operatives and extract from them the information that could decide the fate of not only their country, but of the world as well.

The event kicked off with great enthusiasm among the teams (10 in all). A short prelude show cased a series of events of the year 2021 which formed the background for the war. As the world went on to the brink of the war, the teams were given a general quiz for 10 minutes wherein they had to build in the initial monetary resources for the game along with the virtual buffer amount of $8000 provided to them. As the teams were wracking their brains at it, news flashes were narrated describing which side each nation was going to. By the end of the quiz, the world was divided into two groups (5 teams in each group): the “Khmer Rouge” and the “Freedom Alliance”.

Then came the planning part. The teams were seeded according to their performance in the quiz and they were allowed to choose a starting city from the world map provided to them. The spies for both the groups were then placed in a city each and a clue regarding the location of the spies was revealed to the teams. The main aim of the teams was to catch the opposite group’s spy before any other team does, in order to get the prize of virtual $15000. For this, the teams had to move for one city to another following the leads of the spy given out in the form of clues and shelling out their money for the transportation.

Round 1 ended with the capture of Freedom Alliance spy and it was followed with another task of 10 minutes - this time a crossword but and interesting one. Each clue of the crossword was linked to another one and also the answers to the clues were numbers and not words. This task allowed the teams to increase their money based on their performance. What followed was another series of moves by the spies and the teams till the Freedom Alliance spy was caught again and team Germany got the bounty.

As tensions mounted after round 2, the leading teams of the two groups were invited to play an “Endgame” for the status of “Ultimate Superpower” of the world. This involved three subtasks – one for each member of the group. The task was a test of logic, quick-thinking and mental skills given out for a period of 10 minutes.

After the teams churned out their best for the grand finale, the results were announced and thus concluded a fascinating and wholly intriguing event that was enjoyed by all.

Winners: Harikrishnan (D9), Siddharth (D7), Rucha (D10)
