"Great ability develops and reveals itself
increasingly with every new assignment. "
- Baltasar Gracian
The tech quiz organized by IEEE was one such assignment
which aimed at testing not only a person's technical
knowledge but also his spontaneity and instinctive
nature and thus revealing their true ability.
This tech quiz was held exclusively for the SE's
by IEEE.
The first round was
a eliminations i.e. the preliminary stage provided
the necessary 'oiling' to the slightly 'rusted'
SE minds by giving them questions from their first
year syllabus. The general questions in this eliminations
round warmed up the participants and prepared
them for the road ahead. This was a questionnaire
round.
From the second round scores, the top 48 were
selected for the second round. Here the quiz got
a lot more interesting as every person was given
a partner with whom they had to work for this
round. This round being an interactive one was
more fun. It consisted of 4 rounds of normal passable
technical question and then an amazing rapid fire
round.
With the scores of the above two rounds taken
into consideration, the cumulative individual
scores of the participants were formulated and
then the top 32 were selected. Each person was
given a call to tell about their selection but
with a twist. Each person was given a topic (like
Adrastea –Jupiter's moon or chanakya) on
which they had to research with their team member.
This marvelous theme or the research round was
a different and a surprise element to all but
in the end it also turned out to be very scoring
and added a new dimension to the technical quiz.
This round tested three R's of the participants
i.e. Researching, Remembering and Recalling. This
second elimination round was started with a bang
with the puzzle paper consisting of astonishing
riddles. The next round was a question answer
round which consisted of four headings i.e. who's
who, company taglines, guess the gadgets and technical
acronyms. These fantastic four examined all the
technical aspects of the participants. And the
last one was the above mentioned theme round.
The top 16 were selected for the semifinal according
to their individual scores of these three rounds.
The 16 semifinalists were divided into 8 teams.
The penultimate final took place in two slots,
in each slot 4 teams were competing. This semifinal
was made even more interesting by adding the 'bidding
factor' in the scoring which made the result unpredictable.
With this type of scoring, a single correct answer
and a respective high bidding could result in
a 'dark horse wining the race'. This round also
had the sensational theme round in which all teams
in a slot were given the same topic and thus it
further increased the level of quiz!! The two
topics were- worms and Einstein guns and roses.
This semifinal also had a visual round which spiced
up the wonderful quiz.
And then it was the time for the finale!!!!!!!
Of the top 8 teams, all 4 teams which were selected
were ready to take the final stride and get declared
as the winner. Unlike other cases where winner
gets it all here each and every person gained
a doze of technical knowledge which has no other
parallel. The final were even more stimulating
than the other rounds!!! It was very well hosted
by Amalendu Mani. The finals took place in the
college's audiovisual room and the teams had a
good audience to cheer them up. The final started
with the appetizers- the normal question answer
session and it resulted in the participants and
the audience asking for more! This round consisted
of two stages- in the first stage each the question
asked was a team question but in the second stage
it was the individual who had to answer and get
the points. The next round was again a surprise
where the participants were told to research about
a particular theme right then and there in half
an hour in the final theme round.
During this half an hour a question answer session
was there for the audience in which they were
given freebies for the correct answer. The audience
had an amazing time dealing with 'pretty easy'
questions with 'quite tough' answers. After winning
a lot of freebies and fulfilling their 'appetite',
the audience was ready to get on with the quiz
as the participants were back from their research.
The topics given were space-time, solar system….
Each team was then asked questions on their respective
topics. The next round was the visual round where
they had to recognize the various photos projected.
The last was a completely different round where
clues were given to participants to guess the
answer and marks were given accordingly. The whole
quiz was amazingly hosted by the junior council.
In the end, the format of this quiz was such
that it did not test a team but it was testing
an individual's knowledge and their ability to
adjust with people with different intellectual.
Hence in the end along with the announcement the
winner team the 'whiz kid' was also declared.
After this final, a documentary on black holes
was also shown to provide the audience with some
knowledge.
