Robosoccer

An action packed week…rooms roaring with cheers….and lots of enthusiastic faces.....
the description precisely fits the atmosphere around Robosoccer 2006 conducted by IEEE-VESIT held from 14th to 19 September 2006.
The event put to test the innovative mind and gaming skills of engineering students of VESIT.

Yes, soccer is truly an exciting game. It demands so much of concentration, immense understanding of the rules. But apart from all this, one needs to be smart enough to get acquainted to the gaming techniques along with a bit of spontaneity too! It is not enough to just know the rules; you need to play with them, bend them, so as to top the game.
Robosoccer was no different than this. Right from the initial designing of a robotic soccer player, to the command over maneuvering the robot, everything was part of the race for perfection…

After a dynamic seminar on robotics conducted by IEEE-VESIT and, sweating out in the consecutive workshops, all the participating teams were ready with novel robots.

The event kick-started with Seedings held on 13th and 14th September, 2006. In this round, each team was given two time trials, where the robot was placed on the opponent’s field and the ball in-front of their goal post. All the robots were to take the ball and kick it onto the opponent’s goal. The least time of the two trials was considered. Before the time trials, a 2min practice session was granted to make the teams familiar with robot control.

ROAR had best time 21seconds, and PIPASA ROSINI pocketed the title of the “Best Goal of the Day” on the first day. Day II saw ZIZOU goal in 17 seconds!! And ROBERT CARLOS kicked the “Best Goal of the Day”

At the end, ROAR and ZIZOU topped the seeds.
The rules were decided as; duration of game is 10 minutes, 8 minutes of play and 2 minutes of half time. 8 min was further divided into two halves of 4 minutes each. Robots were clustered in pairs, and the match ensued between two clusters. One robot acted as Defender and the other Attacker. Their positions were swapped after half time. Each robot was restricted to their respective fields, they could not cross the middle line under any circumstances, it resulted in foul. It was decided that goal scored by the Defender would fetch the team 3 points and goal made by the Attacker would fetch 2 points. Incase of self goal, each robot of the opponent cluster would be gifted a point each.

The participating teams were divided into groups of three, and played the Tri-angular Matches.

After a horde of league matches, PIPASA ROSINI-MAPERRASI, ROAR-ZIZOU, FK3GH-UNSTOPPABLE, and ACRYLIC-BLACK PEARL were selected for the Knock-out Round.
The Knock-out Round had a few new Rules; for a goal kick, defender robot was allowed to place itself in any angle within the limits of the D line. If a robot falls into the goal intentionally then a warning was given. After two warnings the robot would be dismissed for 45 seconds and the team would have to play with one robot. In an event of mechanical snags, the team would not be allowed to rectify by calling for a time out. They would have to wait for half time for any changes to be made.

The first Knock-out match was scheduled between FK3GH-UNSTOPPABLE and ACRYLIC-BLACK PEARL. After a nervous start and zero goals in the first half, the match picked momentum and ended in an astounding 12-6, sending the truly unstoppable FK3GH-UNSTOPPABLE to the Finals!

The second Knock-out match between PIPASA ROSINI-MAPPERASI and ZIZOU-ROAR ended in a comprehensive win by PIPASA ROSINI-MAPPERASI (13-7) and found itself into the Grand Finals!

The real war had just started. The adrenaline levels of the Finalists were on an all time high! The two teams were consistent throughout the league. UNSTOPPABLE-FKGH and PIPASA ROSINI-MAPPERASI both knew that, strategy was the prime factor that was going to decide the outcome of this tournament.

The first goal scored in less than a minute and the ensuing goals plummeted PIPASA ROSINI-MAPPERASI onto a roaring start of 6-2! With pressure building up on the UNSTOPPABLE-FKGH front, the second half saw an amazing play by them and an astonishing score of 6-6! But the match took an unexpected twist! After a series of self goals by UNSTOPPABLE-FKGH, and 3-pointers, the score recorded 13-6. PIPASA ROSINI-MAPPERASI emerged victorious!

In particular the teams which qualified had immense potential to conquer varied situations as the game went on. Though a rich set of innovative ideas was witnessed throughout the event, showcased by each and every team, the winners stood apart due to their better skills to overcome the unfavorable conditions and handle pressure.
